Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function??Preschool: BRIEF-P Introductory Kit
The BRIEF-P Introductory Kit is a standardized assessment tool designed to evaluate executive functions in preschool-aged children aged 2 to 5 years and 11 months. Developed by Dr. Gerard A. Gioia, Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, and Dr. Peter K. Isquith, this kit provides a comprehensive measure of executive functioning in everyday settings, such as home and preschool environments.
The BRIEF-P assesses five key aspects of executive functioning:
Inhibit: Ability to control impulses and resist distractions.
Shift: Capacity to move freely from one situation to another.
Emotional Control: Regulation of emotional responses.
Working Memory: Holding and manipulating information in mind.
Plan/Organize: Ability to plan and organize tasks.
These scales contribute to three broad indexes:
Inhibitory Self-Control Index (ISCI)
Flexibility Index (FI)
Emergent Metacognition Index (EMI)
Additionally, the kit provides a Global Executive Composite (GEC) score, offering an overall measure of executive functioning.
The BRIEF-P is particularly useful for assessing children with emerging attention disorders, learning disabilities, language delays, traumatic brain injuries, and pervasive developmental disorders, including autism.
