CARS-2 Manual

The Childhood Autism Rating Scale, 2nd Edition (CARS2) is one of the most widely used and empirically validated tools for the assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since its original publication, the CARS has proven especially effective in discriminating between children with autism and those with severe cognitive deficits. The CARS2 expands upon this by offering more sensitivity to individuals on the “high-functioning” end of the autism spectrum, including those with average or higher IQs, stronger verbal skills, and more subtle social and behavioral challenges.

The CARS2 is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate the severity of autism symptoms across all ages and functional levels. The complete Kit includes 25 Standard Version Rating Booklets (CARS2-ST); 25 High-Functioning Version Rating Booklets (CARS2-HF); 25 Questionnaires for Parents or Caregivers (CARS2-QPC); Manual, with three distinct forms:

  • CARS2-ST (Standard Version): For individuals younger than 6 years of age or those with communication difficulties or below-average IQs.
  • CARS2-HF (High-Functioning Version): For individuals aged 6 years and older with IQ scores above 80, designed to assess those who are verbally fluent and may have milder manifestations of autism.
  • CARS2-QPC (Parent/Caregiver Questionnaire): An unscored form to gather additional information from parents or caregivers that supports the clinician’s ratings on the CARS2-ST and CARS2-HF.

The tool assesses 15 functional areas, including social behavior, communication, emotional response, and adaptability to change. Clinicians rate the individual on each item using a 4-point scale based on the frequency, intensity, peculiarity, and duration of the behavior. This nuanced approach provides flexibility in integrating diagnostic information while maintaining quantifiable results.

Benefits:

  • Broad Spectrum Coverage: The CARS2 assesses individuals across the entire autism spectrum, from severe cases to those on the high-functioning end, including those with Asperger’s Syndrome.
  • Empirically Validated: Based on decades of use and research, the CARS2 offers reliable ratings that correlate strongly with autism diagnoses and provide clear guidance for intervention.
  • Tailored for Different Populations: The Standard and High-Functioning versions are specifically designed for different age groups and levels of cognitive ability, ensuring the tool’s clinical relevance for a wide range of individuals.
  • Enhanced Clinical Utility: The CARS2 includes new features such as caregiver questionnaires, more detailed rating guidelines, and intervention suggestions to provide a comprehensive diagnostic framework.

Key Features:

  • Ages: Suitable for individuals aged 2 years and up.
  • Forms: Includes three forms: the CARS2-ST for younger children and those with below-average IQs, the CARS2-HF for individuals with average IQ or higher, and the CARS2-QPC for parent/caregiver input.
  • Comprehensive Assessment Areas: 15 areas of functioning are assessed, including social-emotional understanding, communication, behavior, and adaptation to change.
  • Rating System: Clinicians use a 4-point response scale to rate each behavior, providing a more nuanced and flexible approach to diagnosis.
  • Scores: Results are converted into a Total Raw Score that can be used to generate standard scores and percentiles. These scores help determine the severity of symptoms and guide intervention decisions.
  • Manual: The CARS2 Manual provides interpretation guidelines, including case examples, suggestions for intervention, and a structured framework for feedback to parents.
